10:07 am: I <3 XKCD
I love it when XKCD makes me go learn something new. Today's hover-text mentioned the Kepler mission, so I went to the interwebz to learn about it.
After posting a status about it to FaceBook one of my friends from work pops up with the fact that his wife works with one of the astronomers who developed the Kepler mission.

03:15 am: parakeet update
I don't know if the owners came back for him or someone else took him in. Either way the parakeet and his cage are no longer outside the nextdoor apartment.

08:14 am: Abandoned parakeet
Would anyone like a pretty little blue/white parakeet?

The family in the apartment next to mine moved out yesterday and just left their parakeet in it's cage sitting outside the apartment.

When I got home last night I saw they'd left it behind - and the cage was sitting in the rain.

I tried to bring him (her?) inside last night, but Darwin went nuts. I couldn't even leave the cage outside my apartment (where it would at least be up off the ground). I gave the bird fresh water and putting back in front of the next door apartment where it was out of the rain.

Free parakeet with cage - Anyone? Please?

10:35 am: I hope BofA gave this guy a new card...
The headline is NH man charged 23 quadrillion dollars for smokes.
"Josh Muszynski (Moo-SIN'-ski) checked his account online a few hours later and saw the 17-digit number — a stunning $23,148,855,308,184,500 (twenty-three quadrillion, one hundred forty-eight trillion, eight hundred fifty-five billion, three hundred eight million, one hundred eighty-four thousand, five hundred dollars)."

The article goes on to explain it was on a Visa card from Bank of America. Anyone else see the problem here? I'd be willing to bet it breaks down like this:

$23,148,855,308,184,500 (amount charged)
$2.31 (purchase amount) + 4885 5308 1845 00## (card number anyone?)

The last digit of the card number is a check sum of the preceding digits, so they likely just published this guy's debit/credit card number minus only ONE DIGIT. That's right - 10 guesses and you'll have this guy's card number!

07:53 pm: recommendation
Does anyone have a recommendation for a neurologist?
I'm on day 9 of this on-and-off headache/migraine, and I'm listen to those who love me. It's more than time I saw a specialist.

11:52 am: Bragging on my brother
I know I've mentioned him on here before, and I'm ridiculously proud of my brother.
In the past he's mentioned being part of work across several universities and disciplines working towards making bionic limbs possible one day. Today he sent me this link about their research that is being published later this week. Their work is fascinating, and the implications for further work and research are incredible - to be able to read brain impulses without placing receptors inside the brain itself. The University of Utah press release on their work is available here:
Reading the Brain without Poking It

This photo and caption appear with the article:

University of Utah neurosurgeon Paul A. House, shown here in an operating room, led a study showing that brain signals controlling arm movements can be detected accurately using new microelectrodes that sit on the brain but don't penetrate it. The tiny electrodes should last longer than those that poke into brain tissue, and may extend the useful lives of experimental devices to help amputees and paralyzed people operate robotic limbs or use thoughts to control a computer.

03:28 pm: Art squee
I purchased a lovely piece of marble art this weekend at the Dogwood Festival, and I just found the artist's website: TileTempo

Her work is amazing. The living warmth (or chill) of the stone was just amazing to me. I purchased a 12" x 6" female nude in a golden-brown marble. The exact design I have isn't shown on her site, but lots of other gorgeous designs are there. Be sure to check out the page of "large works"

I'd love to hear back reactions from [info]metameric, [info]playright and my other artistic friends!
